Southern Stone stock a range of Maltese limestone blocks and scants in all different sizes. Our limestone is perfect for carving, the limestone is quite soft and therefore great for beginners, but is also ideal for those more experienced. The stone is a very clean stone and a good finish can be achieved. Some of the our masons and stone carvers work the stone whilst wet as it helps to keep a cleaner edge. To achieve the best finish the stone can be sanded down with a number of sand paper grits starting from 80 all the way up to 4500 and finishing with a fleece brings the stone to a polished finish.
We currently supply our stone to art colleges, universities, studios, schools and restoration workshops, such as The Art Academy London, London City and Guilds Art School, Headley School of Arts, The Stone Carving Association, Raines Foundation School, West Dean College, Weymouth, Poole and Bath Colleges, Shute Farm Studios, Andy Oldfield of The Fringe Workshop, Andrew Worthington, Eilidh Fridlington, Melanie Wilkes, Moira Ross, Phillipa Hammond, Jennifer Tetlow, Simon Keeley and many other freelance tutors and members of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Please look at our links page to see who we supply to and also the picture gallery to see what finish can be achieved.
In the last couple of years we have attended many Art/Craft Shows across the UK including Art in Action in Oxford, where we demonstrated ‘how to have a go at stone carving’, which enables everyone to have a go. We also stock a range of carving kits and tools from Italy. These can be bought on our website including our eBay shop and also at the shows we attend. During the following year Southern Stone will also be attending a range of Art And Craft shows. We will add a list of all the shows we are attending in due course. For stone carving kits and tools please look at our online shop.
